Sex dungeon owners sentenced to probation

Inquirer Staff Writer

CAMDEN - Nearly five years after a preschooler drowned at the Cherry Hill home where a couple operated a sex dungeon business, the couple was sentenced this morning to two years probation for promoting prostitution.

Martin "Dungeon Master" Hunsinger, 56, and Dorina "Mistress Christianna" Pizio Hunsinger, 52, had faced child endangerment and witness tampering charges. But they reached an agreement with prosecutors by which they pleaded guilty to a prostitution charge in return for a promise of no jail time.

Samantha Wann, 3, drowned in a swimming pool on their property during a 1998 Memorial Day weekend party. Authorities concluded that a 7-year-old pushed her into the Hunsingers's pool when no adults were present.

The child's father, Michael Wann, 38, of Camden, was at the home but was elsewhere getting high on PCP, authorities said. An autopsy later showed the girl had been sexually assaulted.

During a subsequent investigation of the home on West Valleybrook Road in Cherry Hill, authorities found a basement room equipped for sadism, masochism, bondage, domination, submission, cross-dressing and infantilism activities. They also found a cage, a coffin, ropes, whips, paddles, leather masks, false breasts and wigs.

In 2000, Wann, who is free on bail and attended court today, pleaded guilty to endangering his daughter's welfare, a charge prosecutors expect could carry a five-year prison term. Wann also agreed to cooperate with prosecutors against the Hunsingers.

But during the sentencing hearing this morning, Superior Court Judge Frank M. Lario, Jr. told the Hunsingers that after "a thorough review" of the evidence "it has not been established that your activity in any way contributed to the death of the child."

"I had to satisfy my own conscience," the judge said.

The Hunsingers reserved the right to appeal the constitutionality of the state's prostitution statute and said afterward that they plan to do so soon.

The couple said a provision of the state law that outlaws the hiring of others to perform "sadistic or masochistic abuse or other deviate sexual relations" is unconstitutionally vague.

The couple said that because they engaged only in bondage and domination with clients, not sexual relations, the prostitution law should not apply to them.

"I do believe in the Bill of Rights," Pizio Hunsinger said.

Plea deal in case of 'sex dungeon'
A Cherry Hill couple pleaded guilty to promoting prostitution. The case emerged from a probe of a child's death.

A Cherry Hill couple authorities claim were running a sex dungeon out of their home pleaded guilty yesterday to promoting prostitution in exchange for other charges being dropped.

As part of a plea bargain late yesterday, Martin Hunsinger, 56, and Dorina Pizio Hunsinger, 52, will withdraw their pleas if they are sentenced to more than probation. They also intend to challenge the constitutionality of the law under which they pleaded guilty, said Dorina Hunsinger's lawyer, Ralph Kramer, of Haddon Heights.

"My client believes the law is unconstitutional. Consenting adults should be able to act in any manner they choose," Kramer said.

The Hunsingers were arrested during an investigation into the drowning death of Samantha Wann, 3, in a swimming pool on their property during a 1998 Memorial Day weekend party. The child's father, Michael Wann, 38, of Camden, left her unattended while he was getting high on drugs, investigators said.

An autopsy showed she had been the victim of sexual abuse, but no arrest was made. Wann was allowed to plead guilty in June 2000 to a charge of endangering the welfare of a child in exchange for his cooperation against the Hunsingers.

Prosecutors allege that the 3-year-old was pushed into the pool by a 7-year-old girl. She was identified as a granddaughter of Martin Hunsinger's who often visited the home.

During the investigation into the 3-year-old's death, authorities seized sex paraphernalia from one room in the house that included masks, whips, a cage, a coffin, and a "St. Andrew's cross," to which a person is tied, then rotated.

According to a statement read in court yesterday, Assistant Prosecutor Howard Gilfert said the Hunsingers - the couple married after their arrests - advertised their services to paying clients in magazines under the names of "Miss Christianna" and "Dungeon Master."

"The services performed by Dorina Pizio with the defendants' clients included acts of domination and submission, sadistic and masochistic abuse, waxing, cross-dressing and infantilism," said Gilfert, who described her as a "dominatrix."

He also said Martin Hunsinger "participated in the business by making apparatus Dorina Pizio used with their clients."

In addition to promoting prostitution, the Hunsingers had been charged with endangering the welfare of a child for having the 7-year-old in a home where she could be exposed to their materials and lifestyle, as well as witness tampering for allegedly telling the child to not cooperate with investigators.

The 7-year-old was put in the custody of the state Department of Youth and Family Services and put into counseling. Prosecutors had intended to call her to testify.

The Hunsingers are to be sentenced on March 7. The maximum sentence for promoting prostitution is five years.

Wann's sentencing is pending. As part of his plea agreement, the prosecution will recommend a five-year prison sentence. All three are free on bail.

Criminal - Promoting Prostitution

Court upholds conviction in Cherry Hill dungeon case

The state appellate court has upheld the conviction of a Cherry Hill couple who pleaded guilty to promoting prostitution, admitting they operated a sadomasochistic dungeon in a home.

Dorina Pizio, 53, and Martin Hunsinger, 57, formerly of the 1100 block of West Valleybrook Road in Cherry Hill, pleaded guilty to a third-degree charge of promoting prostitution in October 2000.

They were each sentenced to two years probation. They admitted they charged fees in exchange for providing sadism, masochism, bondage, domination and submission, cross-dressing and infantilism services to patrons who derived sexual pleasure from the activities.

Under the plea agreement, the defendants preserved their right to appeal the constitutionality of the state's Promoting Prostitution statute. In their appeal, they asked the court to find the statute unconstitutionally vague and too broad as it applied to their case, arguing that the statute "does not clearly prohibit the sadomasochistic acts - performed."

The Appellate Division rejected the defendants' claim. "As long as the sadomasochism is performed for sexual pleasure, then it is criminalized under the promoting-prostitution statute, when exchanged for money," the court wrote.
